How do you get recommended by ChatGPT?

Roughly 45% of consumers now ask an AI assistant to find local businesses, up from 6% a year earlier — and about 1.2% of local businesses ever get named. The work to be in that 1.2% is unglamorous, mostly free, and almost nobody in the trades is doing it yet.

Why ranking on Google does not get you recommended

Because they are answering different questions. Google ranks pages and lets you choose. An assistant names one to three businesses and explains why, which means it is not sorting \u2014 it is vouching. Vouching requires agreement between sources rather than authority on one page, and that changes what wins.

The evidence for how little transfers is stark. Reported 2026 research found only about 45% overlap between businesses winning the Google map pack and businesses AI assistants recommend, and just 12% of ChatGPT citations matching URLs on Google's first page for the same query.

15.9%

Reported conversion rate of ChatGPT referral traffic, against roughly 1.76% for Google organic. Volume is smaller, but a customer arriving on an assistant's recommendation has been vouched for rather than handed ten options \u2014 they arrive pre-sold. More on the mechanics on our AI search optimization page.

How assistants actually choose a business

They cross-reference. Every assistant checks claims against other sources before repeating them, which is why consistency beats cleverness here. There is no phrasing trick that compensates for your profile and your website disagreeing about your hours.

They also do not all work the same way, and treating "AI search" as one channel is the most common mistake:

  • ChatGPT runs its live lookups on Bing's index, cross-referenced against your website, your Google Business Profile and consumer platforms. Changes take weeks to filter through
  • Gemini is grounded in Google Maps, so profile corrections can surface within days \u2014 the fastest feedback loop you have
  • Perplexity shows its sources openly, which makes it the best diagnostic tool regardless of its traffic share. You can see exactly which pages built an answer
  • Google AI Overviews are not an assistant but carry by far the most volume, reportedly triggering on around 40% of local-intent queries

Review signals weigh heavily throughout. Reported analysis puts the average rating of businesses ChatGPT picks at around 4.3 stars, with businesses under roughly 150 reviews rarely being named at all. Treat that as directional rather than a hard threshold, but plan around it.

Six things to do, in order

1. Make every source agree. Name, address, phone, hours, services and service area identical across your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and every directory. An analysis of 230 local businesses found 53% had mismatched information between their profile and their website. This is the highest-yield fix available and it costs an afternoon.

2. Get onto Bing. ChatGPT's live lookups run on Bing's index and Copilot does too. A contractor with an immaculate Google presence and no Bing Places listing is invisible to a large share of AI local search. It is free and takes about twenty minutes.

3. Check robots.txt is not blocking them. GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended all read it, and a great many sites block them through a default nobody revisited. The effect is disappearing from AI answers entirely while every other metric looks normal. Thirty seconds to check.

4. Add structured data. LocalBusiness and Service markup, FAQ markup that matches what is visible on the page. This is the difference between a machine reading your hours and guessing at them, and it is missing from most contractor sites.

5. Write answer-shaped content. Pages answering one real question completely, with dated specifics and named sources rather than adjectives. Assistants quote self-contained passages, so a paragraph that only makes sense after reading three others does not get used. Content untouched for over six months is reported to be at a growing disadvantage in citation pools.

6. Build review velocity. Steady arrivals after every completed job, not occasional campaigns. This is the signal that most reliably separates named businesses from invisible ones, and it also feeds map pack rankings and Local Services Ads eligibility at the same time.

Nobody can sell you placement here

There is currently no advertising product that puts a business inside an assistant's organic recommendations. That is unusual and it may not last, but while it holds, visibility here is earned rather than bought \u2014 which means doing the unglamorous work now builds a channel a better-funded competitor cannot simply outspend you for. Anyone selling a proprietary AI ranking system is selling something that does not exist.

How to test whether you appear

Ask, in a logged-out or private window \u2014 an assistant that already knows you will happily name your own company back, which tells you nothing. Use non-branded prompts phrased the way a customer speaks rather than the way they search: "I need someone for a burst pipe in Aurora, who should I call?" rather than "plumber Aurora CO."

Run the same prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, since they draw on different sources, and repeat across several days because answers vary between sessions. Record who gets named instead of you \u2014 that list is your real competitive set on this surface, and it is often different from the one you see on Google.

Our Prompt Probe generates twelve such prompts for your trade and city with copy buttons and keeps score. It is free and needs no email.

How long does it take?

New or refreshed content is reported to begin earning AI citations within three to five days, which is considerably faster than traditional search. Building consistent visibility \u2014 being named reliably across several assistants \u2014 typically takes two to four months of sustained work on listings, reviews and content.

The early gains come from the free fixes: profile completeness, information consistency, Bing presence, unblocking crawlers. The compounding gains come from reviews and third-party mentions built over time. Gemini reflects Google Business Profile corrections fastest, so if you want to see whether anything moved, fix the profile and check there first.

Common questions

How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?
Make your business the safest possible answer for a machine to give. In practice that means identical business information everywhere it appears, a complete Google Business Profile, a Bing Places listing because ChatGPT's live lookups run on Bing's index, structured data a machine can read without guessing, steady review velocity, and content that answers real questions in self-contained passages with dated specifics. Confirm your robots.txt is not blocking AI crawlers, which is a common accidental default. Most of this is free and takes attention rather than budget.
Does ranking on Google mean AI will recommend me?
No. Reported 2026 research found only about 45 percent overlap between businesses winning the Google map pack and businesses AI assistants recommend, and just 12 percent of ChatGPT citations matching URLs on Google's first page for the same query. Google ranks pages and lets you choose while an assistant names one to three businesses and explains why, which means it is vouching rather than sorting. Vouching requires agreement between sources, so inconsistent information hurts far more here than it does in traditional search.
How many reviews do I need to get recommended by AI?
There is no published threshold, but reported analysis suggests businesses under roughly 150 reviews are rarely named, and that the businesses assistants pick average around 4.3 stars. Treat both as directional signals rather than rules. What matters alongside volume is recency and steadiness, because a consistent trickle of reviews after completed jobs reads as an active business while a sudden burst reads as something else to both Google and the assistants. Review velocity also feeds map pack ranking and Local Services Ads, so it is rarely wasted effort.
Is my website blocking AI crawlers?
Possibly, and it is more common than most contractors expect. GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended and others all read your robots.txt file, and many sites block them through a default setting or plugin option nobody revisited. The effect is that your business disappears from AI answers entirely while every other metric looks completely normal, which makes it hard to diagnose and trivial to fix. Visit yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for Disallow rules aimed at those user agents.
Is AI search worth optimising for when the traffic is still small?
The volume is smaller than Google today and the reported quality is considerably higher, with ChatGPT referral conversion reported around 15.9 percent against roughly 1.76 percent for Google organic, because the customer arrives vouched for rather than presented with options. Adoption reportedly moved from 6 percent to 45 percent of consumers asking assistants for local businesses in a single year. The argument is less about today's traffic than about being established before the channel is contested, particularly since no advertising product currently buys placement in these recommendations.
